This self-guided tour combines Japan's main highlight destinations with a two night stay in the glorious Kiso Valley. The Kiso area offers spectacular views of the natural scenery where you can soak in the spiritual, tranquil atmosphere this area is so famous for.

Walk part of the ancient Nakasendo pilgrimage trail between the two post-towns Magome and Tsumago. Along the trail you will find spectacular views of Japan's countryside, English signage and a few small tea houses where you can take a break from the hiking if needed. The Nakasendo trail is easy to moderate level of difficulty and takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Day 05: Tokyo - Kiso Valley

Check-out of the Shinagawa Prince Hotel and from Shinagawa Station board a Hikari bullet train to Nagoya Station. (100 min) Make your way to the bullet train lines and from Nagoya Station board a Limited Express Shinano train to Kiso-Fukushima Station. (85 mins)

This magnificent train journey through the Japanese Alps is often compared to the Alps of Europe. It may well be one of the highlights of your trip to Japan.

Upon your arrival in Kiso you may leave your luggage at the Kiso Ontake Tourist Information Office which is located just across the road from the station. They can also provide you with maps, brochures and bus timetables.

Commence your sightseeing of this picturesque, traditional post-town dating back from the Edo period. The town's highlights including:

Fukushima Check-Point - the old check-point where travellers were once required to present their passes for travel along the Nakasendo route.

Kozenji Temple whose garden designed by modern Japanese landscape architect is the largest Karesansui-style (dry landscape) garden in the Orient.

Later, return to Kisofukushima Station and take a taxi to your accommodation at the Komanoyu. (10 min). The Komanoyu has lovely hot spring baths for you to enjoy.
