Meet your taxi driver this morning at the East Exit of JR Miyazaki Station. Your touring of the Takachiho area today will include a visit to the Takachiho Shrine, Takachiho Gorge, Amano Iwato Shrine and the Amanoyasu Dry Riverbed.
The town of Takachiho is rich in Japanese mythology, and the sites there relate to the legend of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, who hid in a cave to escape her brother's taunts, sending Japan into darkness and prompting the other gods to attempt to lure her back out.
The highlight, picturesque Takachiho Gorge, is a narrow chasm with sheer cliffs of volcanic basalt columns and a 17m high waterfall cascading over the edge.
